Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard are set to leave Manchester United when their contracts expire at the end of June, while the club have held preliminary talks with Barcelona over the signing of Frenkie de Jong.
Manchester United academy graduate Pogba left Old Trafford in 2012 to join Juventus as a free agent and returned four years later for a world-record £89m fee, while Lingard ended his relationship with the club. 20 years of cooperation.
Pogba has had a bumpy second spell at United, who confirmed he will leave for a second time after his contract expires this month.
“The club can announce that Paul Pogba will leave Manchester United when his contract expires at the end of June,” United said at the start of a lengthy send-off statement on the club’s website.
“Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Paul on a successful career and thank him for his contribution to Manchester United.
“We wish him all the best in what is to come on an extraordinary journey.”
Pogba first joined Manchester United from French club Le Havre in 2009, scoring 39 goals in 233 first-team appearances.
A key part of the 2011 FA Youth Cup victory, the midfielder joined Juventus the following year and enjoyed a medal-laden spell in Turin.
Pogba returned to Old Trafford in 2016 but struggled to achieve his goals, with EFL Cup and Europa League victories proving to be his only trophies in his first season back at United.
The 29-year-old – who won the World Cup with France in 2018 – is now leaving Manchester United on a second free transfer and could return to Juventus.
Lingard, meanwhile, scored 35 goals for the club at the age of eight, making a total of 232 appearances for Manchester United and 32 for England.
United thanked Lingard for a lengthy statement saying: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank Jesse for all the memories he has helped create during his two decades here and wish him the best of luck in his future career.”
West Ham have conducted a “preliminary investigation” with Lingard’s representatives about the England international, who is now a free agent.
He scored nine goals on a six-month loan at West Ham in 2020/21, while Newcastle attempted to sign Lingard in the January transfer window.
Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth:
Pogba’s representatives held positive talks with Juventus last month but are still in talks with Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
sky sports news Was told Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain had offers.
It is understood that a decision on Pogba’s next club is expected “very soon”, with his final choice expected to be a “football decision”.
If Pogba goes to a European club, he is unlikely to get more money than United were willing to pay when they offered him a new contract last summer.
At 29, this is likely to be the last remaining prime of Pogba’s career and his last big contract, so he’ll want to get it right.
sky sports news Pogba, currently on vacation in Miami, was told that he was doubtful of the French Nations League game in June as he was still recovering from a calf injury.
Manchester United have held preliminary talks with Barcelona over midfielder signing as Pogba’s departure confirmed Frankie De Jong. He is some of the midfielders Manchester United are eyeing.
sky sports news It has been told that the deal is not yet closed, as “significant hurdles” need to be overcome – notably the fee and the player’s will.
De Jong is a player highly rated by Manchester United manager Eric Haag. The Netherlands international played under him for Ajax and was part of the team that won the 2018/19 Eredivisie title and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
However, the 25-year-old, who has already made 139 appearances for Barcelona, is reportedly reluctant to leave Camp Nou this summer.
Dan Sansom of Sky Sports:
It’s a deal that has sparked a social media frenzy. Pogba emerges from the shadows in a 2016 Manchester United announcement video with red demons emblazoned in his hair, followed by a music clip sponsored by Stormzy. The #POGBACK hype has started.
This should be the start of something special. A new era in which the club is still struggling to find its footing after Sir Alex Ferguson retired three years ago.
But Pogba has been unable to inspire United to return to their former glory. The 2017 League Cup and Europa League were his only trophies in six seasons.
Pogba will now be leaving the club for the second time after being booed against Norwich and suffering a calf injury at Liverpool in April. He can’t be blamed solely for United’s failure, but his departure marks the end of a transfer that promised so much.

Liverpool are a good fit for him. He, Fabinho and Thiago are worth watching.
Chelsea don’t have Pogba, thank you. We’ve got Conor Gallagher in the squad next season, young English player, as talented as Pogba but without the baggage
