Nottingham Forest have signed Nigerian striker Tawo Avoniyi from Union Berlin for a club fee of £17.5m.

The 24-year-old joined Forest from the Bundesliga club on a five-year contract, becoming the first international signing of the new Premier League side this summer.

Avoni scored 20 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions last season. He scored 15 goals in 31 Bundesliga appearances and also helped Union Berlin finish fifth and qualify for the Europa League for the first time since 2001/2002.

“I’m delighted to be at Nottingham Forest,” Avoniyi said after moving to the City Stadium.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to play in the Premier League, I’ve talked to Steve Cooper about our ambitions, looking at Forest, with a great history, this is the club I want to be in.”

Awoniyi started his career at Liverpool, signing for the Merseyside club in 2015, before loan spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC, Mouscron, Ghent and Mainz 05.

He joined Union Berlin on loan in the 2020/21 season and made a permanent move last July.

After representing Nigeria at the U17, U20 and U23 levels, Awoniyi won the first of three games for Nigeria against the Central African Republic in October 2021, and in January at the African Cup of Nations Scored his first goal against Sudan.

Forest manager Steve Cooper said: “There has been interest in Taihe from other Premier League clubs and the rest of Europe, so we are delighted he has chosen Nottingham Forest.

“Our recruiting and coaching teams have been closely monitoring his progress over the past few months. He is a player we truly believe in and we look forward to him continuing to develop his potential as a top Premier League striker for Nottingham Forest.”
