Thai newspaper: ‘Vietnam team is too good!’

The Thai press praised the performance of the Vietnamese team, when forcing Japan to chase for a 1-1 draw in the 2022 World Cup qualifying round.

After the historic 3-1 victory over China, the Vietnamese team continued to do something interesting to bid farewell to the 2022 World Cup qualifiers with their heads held high.

On Saitama Stadium, in front of 44,000 spectators – the 4th highest number in Group B matches, phase 3 of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers – Coach Park Hang-seo’s students performed impressively.

The Vietnamese team made a big surprise.

Nguyen Thanh Binh opened the scoring for Vietnam, before Maya Yoshida equalized for Japan from the situation of goalkeeper Nguyen Manh.

Siam Sport wrote: “Yoshida scored the equalizer for Japan, in the match where Vietnam took the lead very early.

19 minutes, the away team took a corner on the left wing. Cong Phuong hung the ball into the penalty area for Thanh Binh to move to open the score.”

In the official time of the first half, Japan could not even make an accurate finish on Nguyen Manh’s goal.

“At the beginning of the second half, in the 55th minute, Yoshida hit a quick shot through Nguyen Manh to help Japan equalize 1-1” , Siam Sport continued.


“In the 71st minute, Japan put the ball into the net of Vietnam, but VAR showed that the ball touched Minamino’s hand. The result was 1-1 and remained the same” .

Although Japan soon has a ticket to the 2022 World Cup, the home team is not so neglected.

Meanwhile, Thai Rath newspaper commented: “VAR denied the goal, Japan only got a 1-1 draw against Vietnam.

The Vietnamese players shocked the home crowd when they opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Cong Phuong took the corner and Thanh Binh headed it correctly.

Early in the second half, Yoshida helped Japan equalize 1-1. The ball was again put into the net of Vietnam, but VAR showed that the ball had touched Minamino’s hand.

Winning 1 point against Japan, Vietnam ended the third stage of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers with 4 points – a record of a Southeast Asian representative.

This result also helps Vietnam maintain its position in the top 100 FIFA rankings (expected position 98).
